Kathmandu: The Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) has expressed serious concern over an attempt by the police to arrest Ganesh Basnet, President of Press Chautari Nepal, citing a news report.

In a press statement issued on Tuesday, FNJ General Secretary Roshan Puri condemned the Cyber Bureau of Nepal Police for trying to forcibly detain Basnet during a discussion program at a hotel in Kathmandu. The FNJ emphasized that the Press Council of Nepal is responsible for addressing complaints related to news content, and accused the police of overstepping their authority by attempting to arrest Basnet without following proper procedures.

The statement underscored the need to uphold press freedom and urged all concerned parties to respect the autonomy of the press. The FNJ called the incident an unwarranted interference in the jurisdiction of the Press Council, reiterating its commitment to protecting journalists' rights.
